Tiger Woods "Scandal"

It was reported that Tiger Woods was having an affair with at least 15 women during his 5 year marriage. Clearly, when the news broke out there was an uproar from the fans, people in the entertainment industry, Wood's sponsors, and of course his wife. When I first heard the news I, too was shocked by his behavior, however, now taking a step back and analyzing it through the gender studies lense, I can slightly understand his actions.

Our readings from Freud have repeatedly mentioned that monogomous relationships are the opposite of natural human behavior. This obviously holds true for Tiger. More importantly, Gayle Rubin's essay "Thinking Sex" focuses on sex negativity, and I believe this news contributed to how society views sex, pleasure, and desire. It is not uncommon to hear of your next-door neighbor having an affair, or married couples in the United States filing for divorce due to irreconcilable differences. Why were people so shocked that Tiger cheated on his wife? I can agree that 15 women is a big number, and he should have seen this coming, but this focus on his sexual behavior models what people think of sex. I find this so weird, because media, songs, movies, and every other form of communication or entertainment is highly focused on sex, so why is there so much sex negativity in our society?
