Earlier this week I read an article (http://shine.yahoo.com/fashion/model-natural-20-inch-waist-182500417.html) about a model who literally had the figure of a Barbie doll. She has been dubbed the "human hourglass" and, with a 20-inch waist and 32-inch hips, is getting pretty close. The Romanian model weighs about 84 pounds and had always been insecure about her looks until her German-born husband came into her life. Since they got married, he has convinced her to start a career modeling and, so far, she's been getting a great response. However, she warns people that she has tried to put on the weight and simply can't. Meanwhile, doctors are worried of the side-effects of having an unattainable figure as the ideal.
Even though for many years the impossible has been sought, this model makes it seem within reach. I personally worry what the success of this model will have for an industry already filled with eating disorders and self-esteem issues. I don't think this body type should be celebrated, especially since the model herself understands just how unique she is. It would be terrible for women to attempt to emulate this figure, which may occur if this model is the next big thing. While it may not be the greatest thing to say, I am hoping for this model's failure. Obviously, it's not a personal vendetta; I just worry about the impact her success may have on young girls who are already struggling with their body images.
