On the website Science News, I found an article called "Ugly Truth about One Night Stands: Men Less Choosy than Women" based off of the study done by Dr. Achim Schutzwohl from the Department of Psychology at Brunel University in the UK. Researchers looked at the differences between male and female responses to getting offered three distinct choices:
"go out, go to their apartment and go to bed with them." Students from the US, Germany and Italy were given a questionnaire which asked them their responses to the three questions based on if the individual was slightly, moderately or exceptionally attractive. Researchers discovered that for all three levels of attractiveness, men were more likely to aquiesce to the three questions than women were. Women were more particular in regards to the man's level of attractiveness when they based their decision.
I think this study does not take into account an important societal factor. Historically, women have been constrained by gender norms to be more conservative in regards to their sexuality. Professor Halberstam spoke to the class about how in ancient times, upperclass men were given the liberty to chose whoever they wanted for their sexual partner. Women did not have that freedom. In addition, it is socially acceptable for men to be with many women, yet on the flip side, women are seen in a negative light if they want to have many sexual partners. Therefore, women have had to be more careful on who they choose as sexual partners, due to societal pressures.
