As I'm sure you all know, last week was the super bowl. In addition to the team spirit, BBQs and tailgates, with the super bowl comes commercial advertising. Some of the most well made commercials are created just for this occasion. Although the commercials are entertaining, every year the advertising seems to become more and more sexist. This year alone I noticed multiple ads that appeared to be appealing solely to men (some of which can be viewed here: http://thegloss.com/culture/video-the-five-most-sexist-superbowl-ads-400/). In professor Halberstam's lectures, commercials geared towards men often times come up. We see common use of sex appeal, depicting women as items of sexual attraction to men. On the contrary, you see many fewer commercials that appeal to women's sex appeal. Football is typically considered to be a man's sport, so it that why the commercials favor to men? It seems as if the super bowl may be an excuse to exploit sexist commercials.
