The Spectrum of Gender

One of the most interesting moments of this class for me so far, was a moment that created a concept I will certainly carry with me long after this class ends. It was in section earlier this week when one of the students mentioned that al these videos and discussions of androgyny and intersexed people etc led them to think that since it is clear that biological sex exists on a spectrum that gender should exist on a spectrum as well.  Brilliant. It made perfect sense that it would exist in such a way and I really appreciated that comment and saw its validity on many levels.
I mean sexuality exists on a spectrum, with just a few points on that line being heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual. And the more I began to think about it the more I saw that one could construct a very solid argument and case for the acceptance of a gender spectrum, ESPECIALLY since biological determinants i.e. genitalia, which has been thought to be the deciding factor in establishing gender no longer corresponds to the range of biological outcomes that exist. I really see this as the thesis for this entire class almost and appreciate that it is an action point to push for after this class is over and hope that it is a transition that will happen on the level on consciousness throughout our society so that people can feel accepted and loved and find their own identity.
