Cosmetic Surgery and Feminism

It is very weird how cosmetic surgery has taken on a mainstream role and that people are feeling nonchalant about it. The current pop-cultural acceptance of cosmetic medicine is clear, and is borne out by the rising numbers of customers. Many famous celebrities have since been tagged with having cosmetic surgeries which has made them look "younger" and "better". This has become known as the "new feminism" which I view as an activism of aesthetics. The cosmetic surgery industry has repackaged and resold the feminist call to empower women into what may be dubbed "consumer feminism."

Once considered to be taboo and risky, cosmetic procedures are currently treated across a variety of media as if they were as benign and mundane as simply whitening your teeth. Not only have cosmetic procedures become more acceptable, but they're being promoted in less sensationalized ways to whole new markets. Television shows like Extreme Makeover emphasizes that point. Cosmetic surgeries are now considered normal. Is this the kind of world you want your children to grow up in?
